4th May 2020 sees the release of Yatin Srivastava Project's new single titled 'all we ever wanted was nothing.', the first piece of music the band will release after a creative hiatus of one year. Although there isn't a clear stylistic shift from the last single 'Shape Without Form', the song is definitely the heaviest the band has released till date and is also the first song that see's Yatin Srivastava himself take on the vocal duties. This will definitely surprise fans that are familiar with the band's previous music.
While the band took a hiatus in the second half of 2019, Yatin continued to work on new music and further, took on opportunities of producing, mixing and mastering various songs and EP’s of other Independent Bands in India and beyond. Being able to move away from the creative space of YSP to work on other musical projects of other bands reignited the creative process in early 2020. This new-found drive for creativity, coupled with reflecting upon the deteriorating societal conditions around the world and specifically in India, the song is a reflection of the anger fuelling within large sections of society against the recent tyrannical actions of the Indian Government.
The idea behind the song title tries to resonate with stories of young people who feel like they've been ignored by society and specifically, the way humanity has weathered the planet away, leaving only scraps and disasters for future generations to take care of. “I have always attempted to highlight my thoughts and ideas into my music, and this song is no exception. The heavy content comes directly from all the pent-up anger I felt, watching the social environment around me eventually deteriorate into Riot-like situations”, says Yatin whilst commenting on where the mood of the song comes from.
At the same time, the song is an attempt to unite these individual energies into affirmative action, which could hopefully change the course of the future. ‘all we ever wanted was nothing.’ is not just a heavy Progressive Metal song, it is a symbol of new found, rejuvenated creativity explored through the lens of real, honest life in 21st Century India for young people, even if it is a small, miniscule representation of the same.
lyrics
Verse 1:
Stay far, I know what they behold
In this enigma, to consume us all
This world that, they create to program
And our memories, are not ours anymore
Pre-Chorus:
I cannot lose another life through this
I cannot see another day of dread
Chorus 1:
Follow me and I will show you how
To survive, to stand and fight
Follow me into the darkest night
Before we all die
Chorus 2:
Follow me and I will show you how
To survive, to stand and fight
Follow me and I will show you now
In this moment, we will fight
Follow me into the darkest fall
Take my hand and try
